Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) revealed that Republicans are grinding away on weekends to get the election security package over the line.
‘We’re in session this week, and we’re working on it,’ he told Newsmax’s Saturday programme. ‘The key is that we get that passed. We can do that with 51 votes, which is why we’re working so hard to do it.’
The Filibuster Problem
Democrats have repeatedly blocked the legislation through normal procedures, forcing Republicans to use the budget reconciliation trick instead.
This procedural shortcut allows a simple majority-or 50 votes plus Vice President Vance’s tie-breaker-to push bills through without hitting the usual 60-vote threshold.
The Parliamentarian Stumbling Block
Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough previously ruled that core provisions violated reconciliation rules, infuriating President Trump, who demanded her removal.
But Hoeven insisted the revised version will sidestep those concerns entirely. ‘We are putting it together in a way where, with 51 votes, we can do it so that it would not be subject to a rule or to being stopped by the parliamentarian,’ he explained.
What’s Next?
Senate committees are now overhauling the bill to ensure it clears the reconciliation hurdle.
If successful, the measure bounces back to the House for a final rubber-stamp before heading to Trump’s desk.
