Judge Dismisses Wolff’s Lawsuit Against Melania Trump

Wolff lawsuit Melania Trump

A federal judge has dismissed journalist and author Michael Wolff’s lawsuit against First Lady Melania Trump, ruling that the dispute should be litigated in state court rather than remain in the federal system. Manhattan federal judge Mary Kay Vyskocil described the legal maneuvering as “contorted” and criticized what she viewed as an inappropriate use of federal court procedures.

Judge’s Decision and Jurisdiction

Judge Vyskocil, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, acknowledged that the parties had a genuine dispute but said she would not oversee what she characterized as an improperly presented legal fight. Her decision did not resolve the underlying defamation allegations on their merits.

The lawsuit arose from statements and reporting linking Melania Trump to discussions surrounding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. Melania Trump has repeatedly denied any association with Epstein and has strongly rejected claims she considers defamatory.

Legal Proceedings and Court Transfer

Her legal team, led by attorney Alejandro Brito, moved the case from state court to federal court. Judge Vyskocil concluded that although federal jurisdiction existed, the court should decline to exercise it, allowing the dispute to proceed through the appropriate state-court process.

A spokesperson for the first lady said she remained committed to challenging what she described as malicious and defamatory falsehoods. Her lawyer has previously argued that the statements caused substantial reputational and financial harm.

Wolff’s Arguments and The Daily Beast Retraction

Wolff, meanwhile, has argued that the Trumps use the threat of expensive litigation to intimidate critics and discourage public discussion. His lawsuit maintained that he had not accused Melania Trump of participating in Epstein’s criminal activities.

The controversy intensified after The Daily Beast retracted an article based on an interview with Wolff. The article had suggested that Melania Trump was significantly involved in the Epstein controversy. Wolff has maintained that his comments concerned her alleged behind-the-scenes role in handling the issue at the White House, not involvement in criminal conduct.

Congressional Response and Broader Implications

The broader debate has also drawn reactions from lawmakers. Some have expressed support for greater transparency and public hearings concerning Epstein and his associates, while others have praised the first lady for speaking publicly about the issue.

Melania Trump has called on Congress to take action and urged lawmakers to give Epstein’s victims an opportunity to testify under oath.

Important Clarification

Important distinction: The judge’s dismissal concerned the appropriate court in which to litigate the dispute; it should not be interpreted as a ruling that either party’s underlying allegations were proven true or false. The case’s current status and the precise wording of the court’s order should be verified against official court records before publication.
