WASHINGTON — Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched multiple ballistic missiles toward U.S. forces in the Middle East, according to U.S. military officials. The attack was followed by joint U.S.-Saudi strikes against Iran-aligned militant groups in Iraq.
The confrontation marked another significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran, which has increasingly involved direct attacks, regional proxy groups and military operations across the Middle East.
U.S. Forces Intercept Iranian Missiles
U.S. Central Command said Iranian forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran on July 28 in what it described as an attempted surprise attack against American forces. CENTCOM said all of the missiles were successfully intercepted and that U.S. forces remained at a high state of readiness.
The reported attack came amid heightened tensions following renewed military operations involving Iran, the United States and regional partners.
The U.S. military subsequently launched additional strikes against Iranian military targets, saying the operations were intended to reduce threats posed by Iran and groups aligned with Tehran.
U.S. and Saudi Forces Strike in Iraq
Separately, U.S. and Saudi forces conducted coordinated airstrikes against Iran-aligned groups in eastern Iraq.
CENTCOM said the operation targeted terrorist logistics and weapons facilities that Iranian-backed groups had used in attacks against U.S. forces and Saudi energy infrastructure. Reuters also reported that the U.S. military described the strikes as targeting groups directed by the IRGC.
The involvement of Saudi Arabia represented a notable development, bringing a major U.S. regional partner more directly into military operations against Iran-linked forces.
Regional Conflict Expands
The latest exchange underscores how the confrontation has extended beyond direct U.S.-Iran military action. Armed groups aligned with Tehran have operated across Iraq and other parts of the region, while Iran has increasingly used missiles and drones against U.S. military positions and other targets.
The United States has more than 50,000 service members deployed across the Middle East, according to CENTCOM, which has said American forces remain prepared to respond to further threats.
Iran has also continued retaliatory attacks against U.S. positions in several countries following recent American strikes, further raising concerns that the conflict could spread across the region.
Diplomatic Pressure Mounts
The escalation comes as military operations continue alongside efforts to address the broader conflict through diplomacy.
For Washington and its allies, protecting military personnel and regional infrastructure remains a central concern. Tehran has continued to respond to U.S. military operations with missile and drone attacks, creating the possibility of further retaliation.
The latest exchange highlights the growing difficulty of containing the conflict as direct military action, attacks by regional armed groups and diplomatic efforts increasingly overlap across the Middle East.
